INTERNET OF THINGS: TRENDS FOR 2017

As the world advances, so too does the Internet of Things (IoT). Technological devices, such as cell phones and tablets, are now becoming even more intergraded into our daily lives. As access to these devices continues to grow and expand, new frontiers of interconnectivity are opened and information becomes even easier to access. The Internet of Things is all about how technology is integrated in our lives, and the web of connections made possible by these developments.

IoT Health Care Trends

The advancement of wearable technology is offering patients a higher level of comfort when they need to be carefully monitored due to prolonged medical issues. Technology has been developed that allows the patient to wear a wireless transmitter. These sensors transmit health stats back to the doctors in real time. Now they are able to track your health behavior patterns as they happen. Healthcare innovations will continue to develop and it is exciting to see what new innovations may evolve.

The patients are not the only people benefitting from the IoT. Administrative staff is also benefiting from these advancements. A cloud based HIPPA compliance platform can give the doctors, nurses and administrative staff the ability to know what supplies and medicines they have access to and in what quantities. It can help track supply use trends. That in turn will help the staff to know what they need to order to ensure they are properly supplied for their potential usage needs.

The common use equipment is even being connected to the IoT. In the patient rooms, new sensors are being connected to the IoT. This allows the care facility to track any items that the patient might need, in order to enhance their care experience. Technology is being used for controlling functions such as maintaining comfortable room temperatures, monitoring patient beds and even tracking the usage of the hand washing stations.

Maintenance crews can automatically be alerted when a particular piece of equipment needs to be serviced or replaced. The system automatically tracks all the use patterns for each individual device in the facility. They can use this data to compile a predictive maintenance profile, perform routine repairs and fix any potential problems before they occur.

ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE

With the incredibly accelerated growth of the IoT, there is becoming a more pressing need for an artificial intelligence to manage all the complex networks of devises and programs. Data and devices are becoming connected to multiple different access points. This is creating a greater need for increased connectivity and processing speed, more efficient communication, more data analysis and improved data interpretation. Security across multiple different operating platforms is also a rising concern. This data must be processed very quickly in order to make it useful for its end users. Managing and processing all of this data becomes a more challenging task as each new device or program is added to the IoT.

The AI field is a rapidly growing one. With the need for improved data management systems rising, leading computer companies including Cisco, IBM and Microsoft are creating new partnerships with large investment firms, in order to develop advantageous partnerships. This is so they will be able to compete in this new AI technology race. The companies that have secured an early lead in developing artificial intelligence capabilities are sure to be in the highest demand. This year will most likely see large corporations targeting smaller companies with strong AI capabilities for acquisition.

This year the consumer AI field is focused on an increased presence of smart appliances being introduced to homes. Voice controlled smart devices have recently taken the market by storm. First, Amazon introduced the Echo, and now there is the Google Home. The competition is about to increase in this field as Apple and Microsoft are gearing up to join in this market. Apple is rumored to be creating a smart speaker that will work with Siri in order to compete with the current market front runners. Microsoft has an update for Windows 10 that will help support smart home appliances. Both companies should be watched closely. It should be interesting to see what smart home devices hit the market this year.

INTERNET OF THINGS SECURITY

With the development of the IoT, there is a new rising concern for increased cyber-security. Programmers, up to this point, have been challenging themselves to develop even better technology, but many times they neglect to put a lot of time and effort into developing effective security to protect the device. A large-scale security breach occurred in 2016. This stemmed from unsecure IoT networks. More attacks are likely to follow in the coming years.

Cyber-security should be a concern for everyone. We are all affected by IoT every day. Many of the new and exciting devices that we are bringing into our homes have a major flaw. They lack the hardware and software necessary to meet the ever increasing demands on device security. As new devices hit the market and connect to other existing IoT devices, the number of potential breach points will increase. This is the unfortunate reality we must face in this new frontier. At this point, there are too many points where a security breach could occur. A security breech could have severe consequences for everyone. Industrial complexes, airplanes, traffic systems, hospital facilities, the electric grid, communications systems or even smart cars could all be targets.

Each day we add more devices to the IoT and make ourselves more vulnerable to attack. Everyone should be concerned about the trends occurring in this field. We all need to do our part to increase the security of devices that we add to the IoT.

This year we will experience some new and exciting advances in IoT technology. We could also see some devastating cyber terrorism attacks as well. IoT health care developments should continue to advance and AI is the hottest new, in demand, technology at the moment. As always, the future is always evolving and changing.
